Groupon have been slammed for using a racist slur to describe a pair of boots

Twitter users have since been tweeting ‘#ShutdownGroupon’.

TWITTER USERS HAVE been tweeting ‘#ShutdownGroupon’, after someone spotted a racist slur in a drop-down menu on the website earlier this week.

It’s safe to say that nobody who goes boot shopping on Groupon expects to see this:

The n-word was used to describe several pairs of shoes on the website, from third-party sellers Kojwa and Margines, as well as other stores that Groupon work with. People were rightfully furious.

Groupon’s vice president of Global Communications issued an apology after complaints were made about the language used on the site.

Bill Roberts told various media outlets:

We are appalled that this language was displayed on our site. This product description was provided by a third-party seller via our self-service platform. Regardless, this is completely unacceptable and violates our policies — to say nothing of our values.
When made aware of the issue, we immediately removed the deal — as well as the third-party seller — from our marketplace. Language like this has no place on Groupon, and we’re further strengthening our self-service controls to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
